RIYADH (AFP) — An eight-year-old Saudi girl who was sold into marriage by her father has been given a divorce after an international outcry over the case, Saudi media reported Thursday.

The marriage of the girl to a man reportedly in his 50s was annulled Wednesday in out-of-court settlement overseen by a new judge in the city of Onaiza, after the original judge in the case refused to bend to pressure to grant the divorce, several newspapers reported.

Riyadh newspaper said the settlement was reached after the intervention in the case by an unidentified "important personality."

The girl's father had sold her last year to the man in exchange for a dowry.

When her mother found out, she petitioned the court for a divorce for the girl.

The judge twice rejected her case -- though he stipulated that the marriage could only be consummated after the girl attains puberty.

An appeals court sent the case back to the judge suggesting he reconsider, but he ruled again last week against divorce.

The case garnered strong criticism from international rights groups and foreign diplomats raised the issue quietly with the Saudi government, according to AFP sources.

UN Children's Fund executive director Anne Veneman said earlier this month that the child's rights were being violated.

"UNICEF joins many in voicing concern that child marriage contravenes accepted international standards of human rights," she said.

While child marriage is not widespread in Saudi Arabia, the traditional practice has been condoned by some clerics who say it is supported in Islamic teachings.

Saudi judges, who are all religious clerics, have frequently upheld child marriages based on their interpretations of Islamic shariah law.

But last week at least two committees of the country's legislature, the Shura Council, were discussing a new law that would set the minimum marriage age at 18.

It has always been confusing to me as the Christian here to understand the differences in Muslim beliefs......I have heard some devote Muslims be disgusted about child marriages and go to some length to prove that Mohammad's wife was NOT a child when he married her.

On the other hand there is the Muslim group that insists that child marriages are condoned in Islam and that Mohammad did indeed marry and consumate the marriage with a child.

I am sure that Christianity is just as confusing to Muslims as there are some weird groups that call themselves Christian and it is a hard job to convince people that they do NOT represent the teachings of Christ.

So, what is the consensus in this group now about child marriages?....Is it cultural?....Is it not believed by the mainstream or true Muslim?....Is there is really a way to come to a final decision?

And what about this law permitting men to rape their wives?.....Does the same questions apply here?

Shariah law really makes me nervous because many of them are truly barbaric and cruel.

First and FOREMOST is that EVERY Muslim MUST abide with the rules of the Quran. And on numerous occasions in this group have we provided evidence that HADITH is a JOKE and reprimanded by the Quran. NO where in the Quran is the age limit of mrriage is stated. BUT...we do have guidence within
eg: When sibling orphans are to receive their inheritance they MUST be BALIGH/MATURED or When one is to enter a contract one MUST be FULY aware/comprehend of the commitments one is to undertake.....ALSO onemust preserve and uphold health issues. we "should NOT take ourselves into adverse circumstances" such is a command from Allah....
With all this in mind, At what age would a female be able to: comprehend, be phisicaly capable and be Matured to enter an agreement into marriage?
My guess is different females have different capabilities. BUT one thing is for sure; and that is ANY female under the age of 17 and is pregnant, there is a HUGE risk of MORTALITY for both child and mother. Given the guidence mentioned above, marriage under 17 yrs of age would NOT according to Islamic teachings.

Eastern Cultures:
Female infants or even Women are frownd upon be it in Muslim areas, Christian, Hindu or whatever........It is a VERY common practice to bury the female infants upon birth.
B4 Muhammad ASW came about in Arabia ppl there burried their girls off; as it was shamefull to have baby girls. Islam condemd these actions and tried to put an end to it. Old habits die hard as they say and so since they could not kill thier baby girls they locked them up in homes. Ans since this could not be done 365 days a yr; girls were married off at the earliest oppotunity-get rid of them as "they bring shame to the family". Ppl using common sence objected but how else can one implement their evil desires and get away with it? I kno! Lets say Muhammad ASW did the same thing!!!! and thus we can claim we follow his example....voila! the Hadith chronicles were BORN/FABRICATED 200 yrs after the death of Muhammad ASW.......

BTW:In the Quran Allah calls His laws "SUNNA"
The term "SHARIA LAWS" is NO where to be found in the Quran....It is also of NO surprise to me that 99% of these "SHARIA LAWS" are HAdith oriented i.e FABRICATIONS and QURAN is agains ALL of these laws. FACT

THe very SAME thing is mentioned in the Quran concening Abraham and his ppl and that we as Muslims should follow their examples....I fail to see where it is said in the Quran that I should follow bookis of fairy tails as my guidence as a Muslim. If anything the Quran CLEARLY tells me to follow NO OTHER source of scripture other than the Quran.....If yoou can prove what u say using the Quran you would be the first toever do so.

Bro Vic you fall into the pattern of pigeon holing everything like ignorant racist people to do people of other races. If you truly took the time to study hadith in particular and understood the Qur'an within as to merely reading it to find something wrong within it's pages you would also not agree with the ideal Muhammad (S) married an 8 year old. Many Muslims only believe it because this is what they are told to believe not because they are free thinkers. Until 1980 I saw 14 year old girls being given away for maariag. My mother was engaged at age 12 and given away for marriage at 13 in 1960. My oldest sister was born when she was 14.

And were all born on Dutch soil under the Dutch flag.
